Jazzanova Drop a Classic

When it comes to Jazzanova, there is always a lot to account for. "All the time, we have to explain to people what the sense in all of this is", says Alexander Barck, one of the DJs of Jazzanova, with an ironic grin on his face. "Sometimes it's funny to us, because we never think of it that way. We love music, we listen to a lot of music - old, new - and we like to make music. And that's just it: A playful interaction with it."
This may sound plausible, but it actually is a huge understatement, because this club collective of six belongs among a small, worldwide group of innovators, when it comes to Dancefloor, NuJazz, Broken Beat, to modern Folk und Soul. Around the globe, DJs and vinyl freaks adore Jazzanova. Their remixes for Masters At Work, Fat Freddys Drop, 4Hero or Ursula Rucker are gems. But the six guys from Berlin have also enjoyed the feat of treating the most different of source material with respect and to simultaneously give it an unmistakable Jazzanova sound signature for such diverse artists as Lenny Kravitz, Common, Azymuth or Calexico.

Their mentor Gilles Peterson, the British Top A&R, radio personality and founder of the label Talkin Loud, immediately recognized their talent and, shortly after their first release, contacted the guys about doing a remix for the Japanese 'United Future Organization'. Soon after, Jazzanova were booked solid for years to come and conquered the dancefloors of the world and their listener's hearts with their own productions and remixes. The ability to bring together different styles and their enormous effort and input into research and the ability to put to work all possibilities, is not only widely respected throughout the international music community, but also constantly drives themselves to be a step ahead. At the same time, their music is truly authentic and works just as well "at the Montreux Jazz festival as in the illegal basement club of your girlfriend's cousin", as Cornelius Tittel, arts & culture editor of the German newspaper "Welt am Sonntag" writes. Whereas other producers have eight different pseudonyms, all working on one and the same stylistic groove, the six Berliners are always "Jazzanova" - coming up with an honorable, otherworldly, unpredictable mix of styles at all times. Greyboy's "Soul Mosaic"

"Soul Mosaic" is the latest Greyboy album, and was recorded 10 years after the release of "Freestylin'," the first Greyboy full-length album for Ubiquity. The tracks crafted into this fourth Greyboy album include groundbreaking territory for the Southern California based producer/DJ. For the first time he recorded full vocal songs adding a new soulful dimension to his music. The trademark laid-back West Coast Greyboy beats remain central to "Soul Mosaic" but are now enhanced by collaborations with folks like Sharon Jones, Bart Davenport (Honeycut), and Bing Ji Ling.

A decade ago "Freestylin'" became a surprise underground hit, it was a building block of the early acid jazz movement and still holds cult status today. Since then Greyboy has released the equally jazz-based instrumental "Land of the Lost" and the soundtrack and hip hop inspired "Mastered The Art," which featured musicians and MCs in a prelude to the "Soul Mosaic" album.

Greyboy has recorded with AG (Showbiz and AG), and the Greyboy All-Stars (whom he helped put together and produce). His music has been featured in movies like Get Shorty, Celtic Pride, The Kelly Slater Surf Pro video game, Budweiser commercials, and he was handpicked to provide a mix CD for DC shoes.

Over the years Greyboy has DJ'd in Japan, Europe, and across the USA. His largest DJ gig was to 5000 people in the countryside outside of Rome, but throughout the summer of 2003 he played to over 20, 000 people a night on tour with Ben Harper and Jack Johnson. His DJ philosophies have never changed, he practices to stay technically on top of his game but never practices a set for a specific night preferring to put together tunes and based on the vibe at each gig.

Working up the rough drafts for "Soul Mosaic" Greyboy recorded parts, solos, and lyrics with guests returning to the lab in his Long Beach home to deconstruct and sift through all the elements. And just like the aesthetic of Killingsworth, the well-known Case Study House architect who built the house which Greyboy recently restored (it was featured twice in Dwell Magazine), less is definitely more. In fact the process of restoring the home is not unlike his approach to making music. His mid-century modern building has been altered, remodeled and added onto over the years, Greyboy is currently putting it back the way it was supposed to be.

Vocalists like Bay Area underground favorite Bart Davenport sings on the two sold-out singles "To Know You is To Love You" and "Genevieve", cover versions of a Stevie Wonder tune (originally recorded by Syreeta) and Cymande respectively. "Genevieve" was nominated as one of the songs of the year by Radio 1's Worldwide host Gilles Peterson. East Coast based Sharon Jones has made a storming come back with Daptone Records over recent years and also appears on two tracks. San Francisco up n'comer Bing Ji Ling adds a lil' Shuggie Otis folksy soul and guitar while MCs like Mainflo (TVT), and musicians and turntablists like D-Styles and Ricci Rucker (Sound In Color) maintain the hip hop pressure, and Robert Walter and Karl Denson (of the Greyboy All-Stars) add a touch of jazz. Rounding out the mosaic are co-producers like the UK-based Quantic and West Coaster Mike Andrews, who recently had a hand in the Christmas #1 spot on the UK charts with a version of Tears For Fears "Mad World" from the Donnie Darko soundtrack.

"I couldn't have done this when I recorded Freestlyin', working with artists from all around the world is one of the beauties of modern technology," says Greyboy.

House Industries Hits Subliminal Projects
Delaware-based design shop opens exhibit at Shepard Fairey's L.A. gallery.

By: Jeff Beer, Creativity
Published: Nov 6, 2008

Since 1993, House Industries has made art out of the letters we see everyday. Often using cultural references to create lettering and type that not only communicate a message, but create a distinct mood and feel. But while we're used to seeing everyone from H&M to Lucky Charms to NYC's beloved Shake Shack use their fonts, this Saturday the Wilmington, Delaware-based design wizards take their artful approach to communication and hang it on the gallery wall. Letters and Ligatures opens at Shepard Fairey's Subliminal Projects gallery and promises to feature a new collection of prints, sculpture and installations that reflect the shop's unique design sensibility.

We spoke with designers and shop co-founders Rich Roat and Andy Cruz about the exhibit, their approach to type and more.

How did this show come about?
Andy Cruz: Shepard asked us about two years ago if we'd be into doing a show and since we like to procrastinate, I think we delayed and just asked him to put us on this year's schedule. And then about two months ago we started putting it together.

Rich Roat: It's a great audience for us out there. We just came up with a concept and started working.

350.org

350 is the red line for human beings, the most important number on the planet. The most recent science tells us that unless we can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, we will cause huge and irreversible damage to the earth. But solutions exist. All around the world, a movement is building to take on the climate crisis, to get humanity out of the danger zone and below 350. This movement is massive, it is diverse, and it is visionary. We are activists, scholars, and scientists. We are leaders in our businesses, our churches, our governments, and our schools. We are clean energy advocates, forward-thinking politicians, and fearless revolutionaries. And we are united around the world, driven to make our planet livable for all who come after us.

We are everywhere, and together we are unstoppable.

Gotan Project Release Double Live CD

Double live album 'Gotan Project Live' (¡Ya Basta! Records) is the first live recording from electro-tango pioneers Gotan Project. Recorded at London's Kentish Town Forum and Neuchâtel, Switzerland, the album features material from their 'La Revancha del Tango' and 'Lunático' world tours.

The group have passed the test of the scene in proving that acoustic instrumentation and electronic programming can come together in an utter spectacle and, above all, stay faithful to the first demand of the tango amateurs of the days of la Guardia Vieja : dance, of course. And thus is the music of the proud Buenos Aires : it seems that the more Tango asserts itself as traditionalist, the more it opens itself up to the chambols of modernity, from Carlos Gardel to Anibal Troilo, from Astor Piazzola to Gotan Project.

Philippe Cohen Solal, Eduardo Makaroff and Christoph H. Müller come from just about everywhere, and have understood for a long time that the best way to stay faithful to their roots is to use their feet; to advance, to travel or to dance. That's why their tango, whilst undeniably new, makes a clean sweep of the past. And because like all cultivated musicians, they know that the term "revolution" means nothing but "the course of returning to the same place".

They also know that the history of tango is inseparable from that of cinema, which has accompanied it from the beginning, and that bonnes images can bring everything to belle musique. Their performance plays with sight and sound to express their art's gift: memory and anticipation interlaced. Between today and tomorrow, this performance makes no choices - because desire, just like tango, is but the regret of the future.

Made at Cielo Presents Josh Gabriel

Made Event presents the highly anticipated return of one of America’s most talented DJ/Producers, Josh Gabriel, for his ‘Eight’ album release tour in New York at Cielo on Thursday, November 20th , 2008.

Now with acclaimed solo success, Josh Gabriel touches down in New York City to display his talent and promote his new, freshly inspired music. Gabriel ‘s most recent release comes in the form of a debut solo artist album, ‘Eight’, his latest collection of tracks from the perspective of a dance floor purist, while at the same time imprinting enough soul to reach anyone, thanks to his brand of musical techno and groundbreaking production. As a marked departure from his previous work, Gabriel's solo work hones in on his darker, effusive musical house and techno side. This “clubber's album,” consistent with music that he would play in a DJ set, includes the first single “Summit”, the techno sensation Gabriel made in 2007 that was played by DJs such as John Digweed and Sander Kleinenberg, and was also chosen by DJ Magazine as one of the top tracks of 2007.

This fall, Josh Gabriel also announced the launch of Different Pieces, an independent record label and management group that integrates all aspects of an artist's career. Gabriel founded the company with long-time business manager Guy Ornadel and his wife, Kristy Gabriel. Together, they deliver a unique depth of experience by combining their individual strengths in music, artist marketing, and the related business aspects that drive and build artist's career.

Josh Gabriel’s reputation for amazing shows and sounds has gained him fans from all corners of the world and he continues to produce and perform at the top of his game and is continuing to reach new heights. Josh rose to international fame as part of the duo Gabriel & Dresden, winning seven industry awards for producing, songwriting and DJing - and achieving seventeen number #1 Billboard Dance Chart hits.

Tru Thoughts Hiphop
Unfold Presents: Tru Thoughts Hip Hop’ is the first compilation from the Tru Thoughts stable to have an obvious genre theme, but this being Tru Thoughts’ twist on hip hop as it stands today, the vibe is still hugely eclectic and aims to reflect the open-minded musical policy and crossover of influences embraced by hip hop in its original incarnation. The funk of The Bamboos; Quantic’s deep dancefloor mastery; dubstep influences from Me&You; Freddie Cruger’s B Boy drums; and the future grooves of Hint and Milez Benjiman combine with the vocals of Phonte from Little Brother; French rapper Trinidad; Ohmega Watts from the USA; and Life, Dirty Diggers and Rup representing the finest of the UK.

Releasing a killer hip hop compilation that showcases a wealth of talent across the broad hip hop spectrum has been at the top of the Tru Thoughts wish list for years. Thanks to the sheer level of time and commitment invested in the day-to-day business of developing and releasing music by individual artists, however, this retrospective has never quite found its niche in the whirlwind that is the Tru Thoughts release schedule. Cue Unfold Records – the newly re-launched imprint from the Tru Thoughts label network – which has been set up as a platform to put out compilations of interesting, creative, independent music, and proved to be the perfect vehicle to take this almighty collection of hip hop to the masses. With a Pilooski remix of Quantic’s “En Focus” featuring Trinidad alongside classic joints like The Bamboos’ acclaimed hit “Get In The Scene” featuring Ohmega Watts, ‘Unfold Presents: Tru Thoughts Hip Hop’ is a must-have compilation that weaves an unpredictable and stunning sonic journey.

Grace Jones is Back!

Grace Jones has just released her first album in 19 years and she told BBC's 6 Music that she will be on our screens soon as well. Speaking to Lauren Laverne on 6 Music, she explained: “Sophie Fiennes has been following me around for the last four or five years and it’s going to be at least nine months of editing, that’s how much material we’ve got.

With regards to its content, she went on: “It’s a lot of performance, it’s me in Jamaica, we had a family reunion and it’s the making of the record.” The star also spoke about the new record, Hurricane, for which she teamed up with Brian Eno, Tricky and the legendary Tony Allen. "There was no record company, there was no money. I just did my little underground gigs to pay for it."

Jones said her new record isn't meant to be mainstream: “It’s not from the trendy producer. I’ve a guest who produced with me was not known above ground. It’s an underground record that is sticking its head up because there is just nothing else around like it. I just got really disappointed with the system of how I felt I was being forced to make a record that I didn’t want to make." - Georgie Rogers, BBC
